Rhine/Danube


The Rhine and Danube rivers are linked by the Main River and Canal to form a link between the North Sea and the Black Sea on a 2,200-mile (3,500-kilometre) waterway. Thus you can cruise across the whole of Europe, past the historic medieval towns and castles of the Rhine, through the beautiful Bavarian countryside and on to the Danube with great historic cities like Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest. The Rhine flows from the Alps of Switzerland north and west through France, Germany and Netherlands to the North Sea.The Rhine is navigable for River Cruise Boats from Basle in Switzerland all the way to the sea near Rotterdam, passing historic towns (like Strasbourg, Worms, Mainz, Koblenz) and modern cities (Cologne, Dusseldorf) as well as fairytale castles in the Rhine Gorge.

Main River & Canal

The Main is an important tributary of the Rhine in Germany, which it joins near Mainz and together with the Main-Danube Canal it forms a link between the Rhine and the Danube at Kelheim. Cruising this waterway will take you through the beautiful Bavarian countryside and past cities like Frankfurt, Wurzburg, Bamberg and Nuremburg.

Danube

The Danube passes through nine countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria , Romania, and Ukraine and past great historic cities like Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest. This is the river of Mozart symphonies and Strauss waltzes that is lined with castles and fortresses from its days as the border between great empires.

 


WHEN TO CRUISE?


The main cruising season is March to October.

Spring and autumn temperatures can range from 10°C (50°F) to 19°C (66°F) during the day and as low as 5°C (40°F) at night.

From June to September, the average high temperatures increases as you travel east along the river and range from 70 to 79°F (21 to 26°C) and may drop to 59°F (15°C) at night.

The most popular times are early and late season when it is not as hot.
